One of our clients asked us today whether it was possible to run backups of their site. Actually that’s a feature included for free with your account and we’d recommend running frequent backups so if the worst should ever happen, your site is back online at the touch of a button.

All you need do is login to your control panel and select ‘Backup/Restore’ from the menu under the ‘Files’ section.

From there you should select ‘Create Full Backup’. All you now need to do is to click the link and your website will be zipped up and you can save it to you hard disk.

However, if your website is very large and over a gigabyte in size, we highly recommend backing up your site manually via FTP. Just contact us via our Customer Service ticket system if you need details of how to login to your control panel.

Does it seem you’re a magnet for spam ?

We’ve just set up our advanced spam filtering system for one of our clients. It protects you in different levels on individual email addresses or across the whole domain and prevents spam from even reaching your mail client. You can set up blacklists and whitelists to automatically block or allow certain people and best of all – it’s all included within your hosting account and totally free. To enable this, log into your Control Panel, and locate the ‘Junk Mail Filters’ option in the ‘Email Configuration’ section.

If you run your site on a WordPress framework and find you get lots of spam, consider using Akismet, we find it very succesful at blocking spam.

On Monday 15th March we will be implementing a new feature within your control panel to allow you to set a different password for control panel access. This will allow you to have a different password for FTP access and control panel access. The new feature will appear on the right hand side of your control panel when you login.

We are also implementing a new “Reset Password” feature on the login page of the control panel so you can recover your password if you forget it. This feature will appear on the login page and will email your new password to the address I have on record for you. This feature will also be available on Monday 15th March.

As usual, if you have any questions about the service, please visit http://www.dannoonline.com/ticket/

FTP Lock
Over the last year there has been a substantial increase in the number of sites on the internet that have been hacked due to viruses that steal FTP credentials from user’s home computers. The hackers then use these credentials to insert hidden code within your website.

Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gumblar for more information on this type of attack.

To reduce the significant threat from these viruses we’ve come up with a solution that protects websites. The solution is to lock FTP when it’s not in use, making it extremely difficult for the hackers to infect your site via this route.

To unlock FTP, simply log into your control panel and click one button to unlock FTP for a period of time. FTP will then automatically lock again after the time period has expired.

You can also nominate an IP address that has permanent FTP access. You’ll also be able to add an IP which will give you access to all your FTP accounts without having to unlock. Nor will you have to unlock FTP if you use the File Manager within the control panel.

These security measures will ensure that the majority of sites have FTP locked, greatly reducing the risk of having your websites infected.

If you have any questions about how this works, or if you’ve forgotten your Control Panel password, ask me a question via our support page.

Just a quick reminder about our offsite system status page!  Our system status page is not hosted on our network, so that in the event of a network or data centre failure you will be able to see the current status of our network.

The system status page can be found at www.webhostingstatus.com. We would encourage you to add this to  your web browser Favourites so that you can easily access this address at any time.

We’ve just finished setting up the framework for a new site raising funds for a villiage crossing in Oxfordshire.  The website is built on a WordPress platform and pushes updates direct to Twitter.

Check out the progress of Alan Stratton as he runs the 2010 London Marathon.

Is there a size limit for emails ?

No, but each mailbox is limited to 400MB in total, exceed this and subsequent new mail will eventually be bounced.
